When we train sometimes we think that we’re doing it so we can get good at training. But in truth we are training so we can be good at life, to deal with whatever LIFE throws our way.

This morning when we were working on the Split Jerk someone said “this isn’t a good place to do this exercise cuz it’s not totally flat under my feet.” That’s right, the ground is a bit uneven, which makes it a perfect training field. Life requires the unexpected from us, and LIFE also ain’t always on a nice flat surface. So what you do at CrossFit prepares you to be better at life; at play, at work, at dealing with the unexpected.
This, in essence, is why we call it “functional strength training” and not just strength training. If we were weight lifters working on our strength we might as well go to the regular gym down the street, sit in front of the mirror and get down to isolating some muscle groups. That will make you look good, but it ain’t preparing you for the rigors of LIFE. We want function before form. Not the other way around.

What do you do in your life? Do you sit at a desk with rounded shoulders and a neck stretching forward with a big heavy bowling ball called your head at the end? Do you move around and lift heavy things, like in a wine cellar? Whatever you “do” in your life, CrossFit will make you better and more proficient at the movement, and make you more comfortable when you are sitting still.
